Angola: Over 72,000 students attending school outdoors

Over 72,000 students in primary schools in the Angolan southern province of Cunene are attending school outdoors, especially under trees, due to a lack of classrooms, the provincial director of education said on Wednesday.

Domingos José Oliveira told Angolan news agency Angop that in total there were 72,327 children attending classes in the open air and that the province had 55,113 children outside the school system.

He added that Cunene lacks 5,598 classrooms required to cover the six municipalities but that new classrooms would be built throughout the year under the local Programme of Public Investments.

José Oliveira also noted that the province lacks 3,142 teachers this school year, which started on 1 February and ends in the first half of December.
