Macau | Demand for Portuguese language classes increasing – Education Bureau

Macau (MNA) – The Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) indicated on Wednesday that as of the 2017/2018 academic year there were more than 4,000 students studying Portuguese in Macau and 90 Portuguese teachers – 50 in public schools and 40 in private – teaching outside higher education institutions.

According to the DSEJ Teaching Department Chief, Kong Ngai, there has been a “increasing demand for Portuguese classes” but that the number of teachers was currently “sufficient”.

Concerning students in higher education level, The DSEJ representative stated that some 39 Macau students were studying Portuguese abroad through merit scholarships, 18 through special scholarships, withe 111 receiving subsidies from the Education Fund to learn in Portugal.

At the moment there were also 81 residents studying to become Portuguese teachers, with seven to teach in bilingual classes, DSEJ indicated.
