Essential Macau | 2018 Shenzhen Fashion Week – Macau Fashion Power

Hard on the heels of four main international Fashion Weeks, fashion weeks in China are following one after the other.

Leading the way is Shenzhen Fashion week, and this year over 200 brands participated. As a close friend of Shenzhen, Macau sent five local brands to join this grand event. Essential Macau rounds up the standout pieces and names to note.

Nuno Lopes London

Marking the start of the Macau Fashion Power show, Nuno Lopes London showcased a glitzy collection.

Macau born designer Lopes moved to London to develop his fashion design skills, graduating with a BA in Fashion Design from London Middlesex University. In 2015, he showcased his final collection from college at London Graduate Fashion Week. From this, the young designer attracted great  interest from British Vogue, Wonderland, Dazed and Confused . . .

Before the show, I was expecting an eyeful of golden glitter. What surprised me was that the first few models were in dark colours like black, purple and dark blue. The outfits, however, still strongly put a spotlight on Nuno Lopes London’s own glamorous characteristics through the glittering fabrics, silhouette, cutting and all-detail designs.

Just like the transition from night to day, the following models began to emit a series of glamorous silver and gold sporty collections, with the silver see-through sheer jumper paired with gold pants setting a climax to the show.

This season the young designer showcases a more mature collection, and it’s also very encouraging to see him show diverse possibilities, with the colours no longer restricting his unique personality.

I.N.K

Designer Kris Chan and fashion influencer Inky Leong unveiled an extreme contrast to previous brands. This season I.N.K projects the brand’s sporty street style, upgraded with more modern and urban designs.

The designer emulates the great outdoors aesthetic at I.N.K, while a stash of multi-purpose hiking rope surprisingly goes the distance in wrapping around hoodie and trousers. Workwear, hoodie, sweaters – these practical outfits are decorated with a twist of imagination, evident in stiff fabric zip details. Large scales of colour blocks are also a keystone of this collection, showing a subtly vibrant Autumn/Winter collection. Thanks to the extraordinary styling sense of the founders, the brand is also good at using accessories to light up the look. Fashionable cross body bags, outstanding sunglasses and leather Patrol Cap are the fashion gear for the upcoming season.

Placed by Gideon

Placed by Gideon is a successful predecessor of all Macau brands. Designer Gideon, born in Macau, also studied in the UK, from where he launched his career. Tam specialises in knitwear and we can see his outstanding skills and selected fabrics on the runway, stating ‘Driven by the simple philosophy of combining premium materials and production standards with contemporary, yet wearable designs.’

Placed by Gideon’s runway suddenly brings audiences to another quiet world, removed from prosperous and busy cities. Light and unaffected outfits are always the main characters of Placed by Gideon. Tank vest, open weave knits, shirts and relaxed silhouettes provide a simple but chic style.

To emphasise the seasonal theme, Tam uses a lot of olive green and bright orange. Rough selvedges are also generously used in this collection, creating a freer, wilder feeling. To complete the collections, models wore straw sandals and knapsacks made by pieces of cloth.
