Designer Giuseppe Zanotti was born in a small town in Italy near the shoemaking centre of Fellini’s Rimini. Since he was young, the craft industry of his hometown laid the foundations of his now blossoming career.
“I was born in a town where everyone was used to the smell of leather,” he says. “Since I was a creative boy, I decided to put my talents and ideas into making shoes.”
Later, he started to work for some small shoe factories as a freelance designer, an initiative that took him to some of the world’s leading fashion houses. During this time, Zanotti perfected his craftsmanship, with particular emphasis on embroidery.
In the 1980s, Zanotti bought a shoe factory in Italy in order to manufacture his own designs, setting up separate departments producing jewels and heels. In 1994 – presenting his first collection of shoes under his own name in New York – he intrigued the industry with shoes embellished with lustrous jewellery and bold innovations.
“Set up to meet every woman’s footwear needs” is the philosophy of this designer, who accomplishes this in part by using jewels combined with fine embroidery to create feminine heels. Today, the brand – once restricted to elegant women’s footwear – also incorporates Zanotti’s hugely popular luxury sneakers.
