Essential Macau Dec | Show some skin

By: Catarina Vasques Rito

Audacity, rebellion, attitude, provocation, sensuality, eroticism – these are just some of the words that help describe the versatility of a material like leather. Made from the skin of animals from the traditional food chain (i.e. cows and pigs), leather is susceptible to endless creative uses that result in absolutely stunning looks. From the timeless jacket to the cigarette pants, through to the skin-tight trousers inspired by the biker/rocker world, or even long gala dresses, the options depend on the concept of each brand and each collection.

The colour palette ranges from timeless black to blue, beige and brown, enhanced by details such as lace applications, tacks and buttons. From the minimalist cut to the exaggerated pleating, leather can be transformed depending on the ideas that sprout from the imagination of the creative minds at the helm of each brand’s creative departments and who, every season, delight those who love wearing the latest trends. There is also plenty of scope for revivalist pieces, created in times gone by, to once again see the light of day.

The head-to-toe leather look is an absolute must right now. Actually, it’s a must at any time, thanks to its impact and the style with which it is associated, whether it’s one with more sexual connotations or bold, liberating and minimalist connotations. The most striking looks come from Balmain, Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, Hermès, Lanvin, Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein, DSquared2 and Belstaff. But there are others; it depends on the style of those who choose to wear this material.

We’re not here to talk about whether or not it is politically correct; whether it is good or ethical to wear clothes made from animal products. That discussion is down to the conscience of each person. This feature is all about the pieces that have the most creative beauty or aesthetic boldness. The truth is that leather continues to fire up any wardrobe, style or fashion trend that is lacking imagination or is even a little bland. Wearing leather always makes a statement, has a strong impact, and has the amazing ability to be even more seductive the less skin is shown.
