Hotel positions increase in Q3

Local hotels had a total of 1,868 job openings as at the end of the third quarter of the year, which represents an increase of 245 compared to one year ago, reveals the latest manpower survey released yesterday by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
As at the end of September, the hotel industry employed 54,600 fulltime personnel, up 8.9 per cent year-on-year. These workers saw their average earnings excluding bonuses jump by 2.1 per cent year-on-year to MOP16,810 (US$2,101) for September.
According to DSEC, about 70.5 per cent of the vacancies in the industry required job applicants with merely junior secondary education or lower.
The industry’s employee recruitment rate fell by 1.1 percentage points year-on-year to 7.2 per cent as at the end of the quarter whilst employee turnover decreased marginally by 0.1 percentage points to 5.1 per cent.
In addition, the average job vacancy rate of local hotels reached 3.3 per cent as at the end of the quarter, up 0.2 percentage points compared to the same period of last year, suggesting the manpower situation in the industry remained relatively stable, DSEC said.

Insurance & financial intermediation industries

On the other hand, insurance and financial intermediation activities together offered 25 job vacancies as at the end of the quarter, an increase of five. In particular, the eight openings the financial sector all required applicants to have knowledge of Mandarin.
According to DSEC, the insurance sector employed 544 fulltime workers as at the end of the month, up 7.5 per cent year-on-year, with average earnings rising 4.1 per cent year-on-year to MOP25,400 for September .
Meanwhile, those working for financial intermediation activities fulltime totalled 399 as at the end of the quarter, representing a growth of 2.6 per cent year-on-year. These workers, however, saw their average earnings decrease by 1.5 per cent year-on-year to MOP13,970 for September.

Restaurants
DSEC data also shows 25,181 employees were working for local restaurants as at the end of the quarter, down 9.1 per cent year-on-year, with average earnings rising by 1.2 per cent year-on-year to MOP9,310 for September.
The sector offered 2,141 job vacancies during the quarter, down 51 year-on-year. Of the total, 58.7 per cent and 23.9 per cent of these vacancies required applicants to speak Mandarin and English, respectively.
In the sector, the employee recruitment rate increased by 3.1 percentage points year-on-year to 10.1 per cent, while both the job vacancy rate and employee turnover rate jumped 0.5 percentage points year-on-year to 7.8 per cent and 7.1 per cent, respectively – implying vacancies were still available in the sector, says the survey service.
