Macau | CEM to trial smart lamp posts in three locations

Macau (MNA) – Companhia de Electricidade de Macau (CEM) will trial a smart city project involving smart lamp posts in three locations, namely at R. de Dom Belchior Carneiro, University of Macau Hengqin Campus and Avenida de Amizade, it was revealed during a spring media lunch on Friday.

This will involve a pilot test run, with two or three lamp posts located at each site, and in collaboration with the Macau SAR Government.

“Not all universities will have lamp posts installed, because it is still a pilot project. We will install two to three lamp posts in the campus in order to test the functions and the requirements and any difficulties we might encounter in this pilot project.” said Bernie Leong, Chairman of CEM Executive Committee.

Smart lamp posts have been proposed as part of the Smart City framework in Macau, and according to Frederick Ma Chi Ngai, the president of FDCT, smart lamp posts will not replace lamp posts in the city but that existing lamps will be fitted with sensors.

In a press conference held in December by the Transport Bureau (DSAT) revealed that smart traffic lights have been placed along Nam Van Lake, which had reduced traffic flow by around 20 per cent.

The Macau SAR Government has inked a framework agreement with the Alibaba Group in 2017 in order to fulfill the goal of making Macau a Smart City by 2021, implementing the plan in two phases.

A strategic co-operation agreement was also inked between the Hengqin New Area Administration Committee, Alibaba Group and Ant Financial on May 2018 in order to transform Hengqin into a smart city.
