Macau | CEM unveils measures for year’s typhoon season

Macau (MNA) – The Companhia de Electricidade de Macau (CEM) has rolled out a series of measures for this year’s typhoon season after the last Typhoon Hato on August 23, 2017 caused important damages to the company’s network system and sub-systems.

Amongst the measures presented by the Chairman of CEM Executive Committee, Bernie Leong, at a luncheon held with media representatives on Tuesday, featured the installation of flood detectors, the optimised instalment of street lighting control boxes and monitoring system, as well as the revision of water prevention design requirements in substations and electricity facilities.

CEM also plans to work with the Transport and Public Works Bureau (DSSOPT) in formulating windproof and water prevention standards for power distribution facilities.

The company claimed that Hato’s passage last year has affected some 220 customer substations, 133 LV distribution boxes, 3,432 LV potheads and 1,545 public lightings.

The MOP1.52 billion investment CEM spent in 2017 – very similar to the amount to be invested in 2018 – were distributed in the transmission and distribution of networks (61 per cent), energy generation (29 per cent), and customer services and others (10 per cent).

In particular, the 61 per cent allocated to the expansion and maintenance of transmission and distribution networks has been distributed to the development of projects such as the primary substations for the public hospital Conde S. Januário and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, to be completed and commissioned in 2018, as well as initial investment in future projects such as the medical complex of the islands and the Barra LRT station.
