Macau | Cultural industries gained leverage in local economy in 2016

A total of 1,913 organizations operated in the period with people engaged in the activity increasing 7.7 per cent to 11,003.

Total Service Receipts went up 9.7 per cent year-on-year to MOP6.86 billion.

The largest part of organizations are included in the ‘Creative design’ sub-sector (1,021), followed by ‘Digital media’ (564), ‘Cultural exhibitions & performances’ (218), and ‘Art collection’ (110).

Service Receipts (MOP3.48 billion) and Gross Value Added (MOP1.28 billion) in ‘Digital media’ comprised 50.6 per cent and 57.4 per cent of the total of cultural industries, repectively.

A remarkable increase was also observed in ‘Cultural exhibitions & performances,’ of which Gross Value Added amounted to MOP290 million, up 26.3 per cent from a year before. DSEC noted that the area thrived ‘with the active support of the Government.’

In 2016, DSEC conducted a number of specialised surveys in the four domains of cultural industries. ‘Survey results were combined with data collected from relevant industries surveys of DSEC to estimate the economic contribution of cultural industries in Macao,’ DSEC said.

Gross Value Added measures the sectorial contribution to the economy.
