Macau (MNA) – The programme director and co-founder of the Script Road – Macau Literary Festival, Hélder Beja, announced on Friday that he is stepping down from his position within the Festival.
Speaking to Macau News Agency (MNA), Mr. Beja explained that the “the main reason” for abandoning the Festival stems from recent events leading to the cancellation of a number of authors from the Festival line-up.
Beja stated that his decision was made after he was informally told by relevant authorities that the presence of some of the authors confirmed in the programme was not appropriate.
In the press release that the incumbent director sent to media today, he stated further that he was in “no condition to continue on board under such a scenario.”
To MNA, Mr. Beja added that this was solely “a personal decision.”
“Out of respect for my colleagues and the participants of the Festival, I will remain director of this edition of the Festival until the end,” he explained.
The 7th edition of the Literary Festival will be launched tomorrow, March 10, and will run until March 26.
Mr. Beja added that, as of today, he has no intention of continuing working for the Festival in another position after this edition.
