Macau (MNA) – The Vice-President of the Macau Legislative Assembly (AL), Chui Sai Cheong, said on Monday that the current AL President, Ho Iat Seng, has all the necessary attributes to be the new Macau Chief Executive (CE).
“I think he has all the conditions to become CE but that’s for him to decide. He has already reached 40-years old and has the political capacity,” Mr. Chui said during a press conference with both the AL President and Vice-President to discuss the past AL session.
After 10 years in office, the current CE, Fernando Chui Sai On, will reach the end of his term in 2019, with elections to be held that year for the position.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ho refused to respond to any question concerning if he intended to run for the CE position, stating that a press conference to discuss a past AL session was not the proper occasion to do so.
The Macau CE is elected by a 400-member Electoral Committee, with prospective candidates having to be Chinese citizens and permanent residents of the Macau SAR.
In addition, a candidate cannot hold the right of residence in a foreign country and if so, he or she must revoke it before the date of his/her inauguration.
The person on the job must also be at least 40 years of age during the time of nomination as a candidate and be residing in Macau for at least twenty consecutive years.
