Macau | Ilha Verde typhoon shelter still operational – Social Welfare Bureau

Macau (MNA) – The emergency shelter at Ilha Verde, in the northwest of the Macau Peninsula, is still operational as of Tuesday, after Typhoon Mangkhut affected the city during the weekend.

According to a representative from the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS), three homeless people were still using the shelter as of today, although it is not clear what will happen to these three individuals once the shelter closes.

From 9:00 pm on September 15 to 7:00 pm on September 17, a total of 1,272 adults and 74 minors took shelter in 16 of the safe havens provided by the Macau SAR Government.

In total, 538 of the people who took shelter were Macau residents, while 808 were non-residents, namely 58 from Hong Kong, 455 from Mainland China and 295 from other countries.

The government had established 16 typhoon refuge centres in Macau.

The IAS also understands that there are 218 social welfare centres in the city that have experienced varying levels of water damage due to the typhoon.

Residents of low-lying areas were requested to evacuate from 9:00 pm on September 15.
