Macau | Investigation commenced to check any disciplinary violation on approving immigration – Secretary for Economy

Macau (MNA) – The Secretary for Economy and Finance, Lionel Leong Vai Tac disclosed that the government has commenced investigation on any disciplinary violation appeared during evaluating immigration application, an official release on Friday revealed.

The move was made following the release of a report by the Commission Against Corruption (CACC) on Monday, slamming the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) for lack of stringent vetting in its approval and checking mechanisms when granting temporary residence permits for ‘major investment immigration’ and ‘technical immigration’.

The Secretary had a meeting today with the Macau Federation of Trade Unions (FOAM) representatives and discussed matters relating to improving workers’ skills and exchanged opinions in refining the review and monitor systems on ‘major investment immigration’ and ‘technical immigration’.

Secretary Leong asserted that he had requested IPIM to re-examine the existing application cases.

President of FOAM, Chan Kam Meng, reiterated that FOAM does not refuse the import of talents to the city, but noting that the related procedure should be carried out with precision.

FOAM also proposed five suggestions for improving the related system – making good planning guidance for introducing talents; creating point system for talents introduction; making related procedure available for the public; straightening the function of the Talents Development Committee; and reviewing the Employment of Non-resident Labour Law.

In response, the Secretary expressed his agreement of the suggestions, while re-affirming that IPIM has commenced improvement schemes of short, medium and long terms.
