Macau (MNA) – Tests and investigations are being carried out after the Legionella bacteria was recently discovered by Quarantine inspectors of Gongbei Customs in the water used to cool air conditioning systems at the Gongbei port area
According to the “Standard of Sanitary and Hygienic Conditions of Central Air Conditioning System in Public Places”, water samples within cooling towers or other water droplets in the area should test negative for the Legionella bacteria.
Gongbei Customs has ordered an immediate disinfection against the Legionella bacteria in all the air conditioning systems at the Gongbei port area.
The bacteria that cause Legionnaires’ disease live in water and can multiply in the water used to cool air conditioning systems, so infections can be prevented by routinely maintaining and treating the systems.
Legionnaires’ disease causes fever, chills, a cough and shortness of breath.
People outside can be exposed to the bacteria if a water cooling system emits contaminated water particles into the air.
