Macau | Medical internships not guaranteed for non-locals who pass qualifying exam

Macau (MNA) – The proposed changes to be made to the medical internship system, which includes the establishment of a Medical Academy announced during an Executive Press Council in September, will include a medical internship system that prioritises the hiring of local students.

The bill, which was debated during the Second Standing Committee, recommends that non-residents can take an internship test, which however, may not guarantee that the candidate will be able to take an internship in Macau.

Committee member Chan Chak Mo stated that if the internship admission examination is world-recognised, overseas candidates might take the Macau examinations which would benefit Macau’s promotion of Chinese medicine.

According to Mr. Chan, the candidates might benefit from returning to Mainland China to work after taking the examination.

However, priority for local residents searching for work will be made, according to the legislator.

The bill authorises non-residents to obtain local medical licenses in case there is a need.

The bill authorizes the granting of temporary licenses to nonresident professionals, in “case of necessity”.

The new plan covers a total of 15 professions, namely doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, therapists, psychologists, nutritionists and others.

In a future meeting, supplementary regulations regarding the qualifications of medical professionals will be questioned.
