Macau | Mehdi Bennani wins FIA WTCC Opening Race

Sébastien Loeb Racing’s Mehdi Bennani was considered the winner of the FIA WTCC Opening Race after a last lap pile up crash led to the race being cancelled

Macau (MNA) – “My day on Friday was very tricky and I was very lucky to start in the pole position for this race. I think it’s the best victory in my career, it’s very special to run here in Macau,” said the Moroccan driver after his third WTCC victory this season.

The WTCC Opening Race runs on a reverse-grid race format, with the fastest 10 drivers of the first qualifying reversed to decide the starting grid.

Due to an engine change penalty by Polestar Cyan Racing’s Néstor Girolami the final results of the qualifying session were altered with Girolami forced to start in 15th in the WTCC race.

The new results placed to Bennani start, Tom Coronel from ROAL Motorsport in second and Japanese driver Ryo Michigami in third – the first Japanese driver to podium in the WTCC –  with the line up remaining unchanged when the race was suspended.

Macau driver Mak La Kok finished in 17th.
