Macau | MSAR losing business opportunities with Mainland – expert

Macau (MNA) – Macau “could be a bridge” for Western businesses with mainland China “but it is not,” Dr. Alexander Kocsis said on Wednesday during a meeting organized by the France Macau Chamber of Commerce (FMCC).

Dr. Kocsis, an Of Counsel working for Hylands Law Firm with corporate and law background and strong experience in China, also said that Macau and Hong Kong SARs live “inside a bubble,” and that such position is both a strength and a weakness.

He highlighted his perception that the SARs have scarce knowledge on the Chinese business environment and need to increase their contacts with the Mainland.

“I think Macau will always have a very special position” for the central government and will always have “an advantage in the long term”, Dr. Kocsis said. He added that he considers the process of integration with the Mainland will be smooth, as it is in the interest of the central government.

He further argued it is key for companies to adapt to the Chinese culture, to grab opportunities fast and to keep evolving as business environment changes. “The idea of starting a company doing the same thing for 30 or 50 years” will not succeed, he said.

Dr. Kocsis claims technology will be a field full of opportunities for companies. The leading role of China in 5G development and the implementation of Internet Protocol 6 (IPV6) are a “true opportunity” for foreign businesses, as China wants people who are “innovative, creative, have the energy” and are willing to take risks.

“I think we’re going to see that innovative Western companies are going to have to transform themselves much faster than in the Western countries,” Dr. Kocsis said.
