Macau | UPDATED – One man arrested for suspected selling virtual currency

Macau (MNA) – Macau SAR Judiciary Police (PJ) revealed on Friday that they had arrested a local resident for suspected fraud to sell virtual currency.

The police announced on Wednesday that they have launched an investigation into a company which allegedly promoted the sale of cryptocurrency in the city after media raised questions to the police about a conference that was recently organised in a Cotai hotel to promote the services with the intent of co-operating with local casinos and junkets.

The arrested suspect, surnamed Hong, is a 37-year-old local resident who claims to be a driver for VIP room clients.

The suspect told police that he was simply helping his friends from Mainland China hold the conference.

Citing information available on the website of the company in question, the PJ said that a total of 2 billion subscriptions were intended to be issued, with the price subscription of HK$3 amounting to HK$6 billion.

The PJ further disclosed that there were some ten more suspects at large who are believed to be organisers of the conference.

The majority of the suspects in the case are from Mainland China, according to the PJ spokesperson.

The suspected company claimed that they had collaborated with several major local junkets to provide virtual currencies that can be used for gambling online as well as enabling the exchange of chips for gambling offline in local VIP rooms.

The PJ confirmed that no junket had co-operated with the company.
