Sérgio de Almeida Correia announced on Friday his candidacy for the presidency of the Macao Lawyers Association, a first after incumbent President Jorge Neto Valente's several consecutive terms

Macau (MNA) – Sérgio de Almeida Correia announced on Friday his candidacy for the presidency of the Macao Lawyers Association.

Incumbent president Jorge Neto Valente has occupied the position for several consecutive years without challenge.

It is thus the first time in many years that a new candidate will run for the position. In previous declarations, Mr. Neto Valente had claimed he was not going to seek re-election in 2018 for the head of the autonomous professional body.

Almeida Correia officially declared his candidature in a press conference held at 5:00 pm today.

Speaking to Macau News Agency (MNA) earlier on the phone, the lawyer said that he aims to hold discussions within the Association regarding its stance on various matters in a more “participative process.”

He noted additionally that he will now start collecting opinions from colleagues about their “main concerns” in order to select the most relevant points to support his platform.

The deadline for candidate submission is slated for October 31, with the upcoming elections – for presidency, General Assembly, Fiscal Council and the Superior Advocacy Council (CSA) – set to take place sometime between December 1 and 15.

The Macao Lawyers Association was founded in 1991 – the statutes were published in the Official Gazette in 1989 – with its first president the late Henrique de Senna Fernandes. Maria Amélia António was appointed first Secretary General.

He started his professional career as legal counsellor to the Macau Marine Department in 1986, having also worked for the Department of Justice Affairs under the former Portuguese Administration of Macau.

He returned to the city in 1993 after a few years in Portugal and joined Rui Afonso until 1999. He returned to Portugal after the handover, and moved back to Macau once again in 2013 to continue working with Mr. Afonso until 2017, when the latter passed away in March.

In August 2017, he founded his own office, ACS – Lawyers and Private Notary.

Almeida Correia’s experience covers mainly the fields of administrative, public, civil, tax and company law.

The lawyer holds a law degree from the University of Lisbon, Faculty of Law, in the branch of Juridical Political Sciences, has a Master’s in Political Sciences and a degree in Political Advanced Studies, both from Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE) in Lisbon.
