Macau (MNA) – Some 4,000 public housing units will be made available in the Macau New Urban Area Zone A in 2019, according to Secretary for Transportation and Public Works, Raimundo Arrais do Rosario during a Q&A session held in the Legislative Assembly (AL) on Thursday.
Seven construction projects within Zone A are handled by the Office of Infrastructure Development (GDI) which will develop each project one by one, according to the Secretary.
Rosario said that he would encourage lower-income residents to apply to live in the public housing projects, which he had set out as a priority.
Ao Peng Kong, President of the Board of Directors of the Civil Engineering Laboratory of Macau (LECM) has told Macau News Agency (MNA) that while the purpose of the area has been made clear, with the government mostly intending for the area to be used for housing, studies needs to be made over population density and land use.
According to Ao, the current government plan involves 28,000 public housing and 4,000 private housing units, with a total capacity for 96,000 people.
However, its proximity to the Gongbei Border Gate as well as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau-Bridge (HZMB), Ao worries that there is a lack of cohesive urban plan available for the residents, without any indication of any commercial projects being planned in the area.
During a previous session of the Urban Planning Committee (CPU), it was revealed that one fifth of Zone A will be dedicated to green space.
