Macau | St. Paul’s Ruins bronze statues to be removed for repairing

Macau (MNA) – Two of the seven bronze statues sitting in the facade of the Ruins of St. Paul’s will be removed in mid-November in order to be repaired, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) revealed during today’s meeting with the Cultural Heritage Committee.

According to Deland Leong Wai Man, head of the Cultural Heritage Department of IC, the preliminary investment for repairing the two statues is set at MOP900,000 (US$111,985).

Ms. Leong said that the exact amount to be spent with the repair project will be reached when a more detailed report on the repairing works for the remaining five bronze statues is introduced next year.

The head of the Cultural Heritage Department added she expected one month would be sufficient for repairing the two bronze statues.

Introduced during the meeting today by Choi Kin Long, head of the Division for Cultural Heritage Conservation of IC, the bronze statues were said to be all subject to different levels of erosion due to environmental impacts and residues left by pigeons.

During the meeting, IC suggested covering the niches where the bronze statues are placed with fine mesh to avoid pigeons settling in the spot. No objections to the suggestion were made by committee members.

The relevant project will be performed at night time, said Ms. Leong.
