Macau starts to discuss minimum wage

On the same day that Hong Kong set its minimum wage value at HK$28 dollars per hour, starting May 2011, Macau officially started discussing the issue. The Standing Committee for the Coordination of Social Affairs approached this issue for the first time, but there is still a long way to go before any decisions can be made. For now, no concrete timeframe exists regarding when Macau will eventually enact a minimum wage system, although the government expects to reach a basic consensus with employers and employees’ representatives by next year. According to the director of the Labour Affairs Bureau, Shuen Ka Hung, the influential Macau Chamber of Commerce will shortly launch a survey on the minimum wage topic among its members.
