Macau | Surf Hong to be fined MOP230,000 by Labour Affairs Bureau

Macau (MNA) – The Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) will fine lifeguard company Surf Hong a total of MOP230,000 (US$28,498) after investigating the company for labour violations, according to a release on Tuesday.

According to the Labour Relations Law, employers can be fined between MOP10,000 and MOP25,000 for each violation.

There have been no reports of lifeguards being dismissed after the strike.

Some 24 lifeguards had gone on strike in August 2018, leading to the closure of two pools, namely Cheoc Van and Dr. Sun Yat Sen Swimming Pools.

The employees had gone on strike due to issues such as a lack of overtime pay issued, a failure to give pay slips and the lack of annual leave.

Lifeguards were made to work 13 to 18.5 hours per day during peak season.

Surf Hong had MOP26.3 million contract for lifeguard services for swimming pools under the Sports Bureau, which will be set to expire in 2019.
