Macau | Taxi infractions better treated as administrative violations and not crime – Secretary for Security

Macau (MNA) – Studies need to be conducted if the city is to criminalise any infractions committed by taxi drivers such as overcharging, given that this would generate increased court costs, said the Secretary for Security, Wong Sio Chak.

Speaking on the sidelines of a public event on Wednesday, the Secretary claimed that increased expenses to handle such crimes in court is the main reason the government has been advocating treating taxi infringiments as administrative violations.

Currently, infringements committed by local taxi drivers are considered and handled as administrative violations.

The Secretary also said yesterday that he respects the Public Prosecutor’s Office’s decision to charge the taxi driver accused in a recent case of suspected kidnapping and overcharging his passengers for ‘unlawful pricing.’

The 3rd standing committee of the Legislative Assembly (AL) is currently discussing the revision of the taxi regulation bill with the government.
