Macau | Typhoon signal no.3 still hoisted, flooding in low-lying areas expected

Macau (MNA) – Typhoon signal no.3 is still in effect and will remain so on Friday morning, the Macau weather authority stated.

Under the influence of tropical cyclone Ewiniar, winds with sustained speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected or are blowing. Wind gusts may exceed 110 kilometres per hour in the city.

Currently, Ewiniar is estimated to be about 150 kilometres west-northwest of Macau and is forecast to move north-northwest at around five kilometres per hour.

Both a rainstorm signal and a thunderstorm warning are still in force as rain is expected to persist, risking flooding in low-lying areas.

The thunderstorm warning was valid until 09:30am.

Primary, infant and special education schools will suspend classes for the whole day. Secondary education schools will have classes suspended in the morning.

The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) noted in a bulletin issued at 07:09am that schools should ensure their premises are open and arrange staff to look after students who have arrived at school until conditions are safe for them to return home.

Residents are advised to avoid outdoor activities and beware of possible damage and impact on driving safety caused by gusts.

As winds over the bridges are expected to be strong and gusty, drivers are also advised to pay attention to traffic safety here, too. Motorcyclists should travel between the Macau Peninsula and Taipa Island via the motorcycle lane on Sai Van Bridge.
