Macau | Video recording to be allowed in taxis - Media

The government will now allow video recording in taxis, with measures taken to protect privacy of passengers and drivers

Macau (MNA) – The Macau SAR Government has reached a consensus on video recording in taxis, and have finally decided to allow it, according to Raimundo Arrais do Rosário, after a 3rd standing committee meeting, according to TDM Radio Chinese.

This decision marks a turnaround from previous committees when video recording had been considered an item that had to be crossed off.

Chairman of the committee, Vong Hin Fai, specified that a government representative had said that the recordings taken would be deleted after 30 days and be kept password-protected, without any way for the taxi driver to access.

The camera will be placed around the rear mirror, according to Vong.

Taxi recordings will be used to investigate any complaints that drivers or passengers have made.

Fines had not changed since the previous proposal.

The number given for fines had been reduced from MOP30,000 to MOP9,000, according to previous proposals.

After collecting data and the views of relevant parties, the committee hopes to ready the law and submit it to Legislative Assembly (AL) for consideration.
