Currently around 12 percent of all mobile phone users are still under a 2G network plan, but that will soon change once all operators start only offering 3G plans from July 9.
There are around 169,000 users still with 2G.
According to the Telecommunications Regulation Bureau this will be a smooth transition, as it had already asked operators to inform users of the changes and offer them special plans to make the change to 3G.
“Some 3G service plans are actually cheaper than existing 2G plans,” Brendan Sio Weng Weng, from the bureau’s competition promotion department, said.
Nonetheless, the 2G service will be available for tourists visiting the SAR.
