The construction sector in Macau contracted last year, with the total value of construction work decreasing by 28.0 percent year-on-year to MOP22.27 billion (US$2.78 billion).
This was mainly due to a decrease in the total value of private construction projects, relating to a drop in the number of hotel-resorts and private residential projects under construction.
According to data from the Statistics and Census Service, there were 1,178 establishments operating in the construction sector in 2010, down by 115 year-on-year.
The number of persons engaged also decreased, by 18.4 percent, to less than 15,300.
Nevertheless, the overall number of construction projects carried out last year went up by 21.2 percent, to around 1,750.
