On Saturday, the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), China’s top legislature adopted an interpretation on two articles of the Basic Law of Macau concerning election issues.
The interpretation stated that the necessity of changing the methods to select the chief executive and the Legislative Assembly members should be decided by the NPC Standing Committee upon proposal from the chief executive.
Commenting on this issue, chief executive Fernando Chui Sai On said the government would now hold a public consultation on whether the methods for the formation of the Legislative Assembly in 2013 and the selection of the chief executive in 2014 should be revised and, if so, how.
He said the government is expected to submit a related report to the NPC Standing Committee by early next month.
