March 19, 2018 was a special day for Melco Resorts & Entertainment Limited (Melco) and their employees, with 100 Melco employees graduating from various Melco-sponsored life transforming learning programmes; including with Bachelor’s degrees, from diploma programmes in hospitality and gaming management, the Back to School General Education Programme, and being awarded Melco scholarships.

One of the highlights of the ceremony was a total of 15 local employees graduating from the in-house driven Bachelor’s degree programme in partnership with Edinburgh Napier University.

Mr. Lawrence Ho said, “We are extremely proud of our colleagues, who have demonstrated perseverance and determination to successfully attain personal and professional goals. Whole Person Development

Corporate culture has arguably always been important, but it has only become a popular point of discussion over the past few decades.

Under the leadership of Lawrence Ho, the company offers an array of learning opportunities to embrace a whole person development philosophy. To provide employees with life transforming learning opportunities, Whole Person Development comprises programmes such as Melco YOU-niversity, Diploma Programmes, Back to School and Melco Scholarship. Melco’s in-house Learning Academy, which supports the Company’s Whole Person Development initiatives, has offered over 200 learning programmes per year since its establishment in 2010.

“Back to School” High School Diploma Programme

In April 2010, Melco teamed up with Escola Secundária Luso-Chinese de Luís Gonzaga Gomes and the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) to launch Macau’s first and only in-house “Back to School” high school diploma programme. The programme is taught on-site at the Melco Learning Academy, allowing employees greater flexibility in earning their high school diploma – an essential qualification for advancing their career.

In order to provide cross-exposure experience to both gaming and non-gaming employees, Melco co-operates with the Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT) and the University of Macau for the Diploma in Hospitality Management and Advanced Diploma in Gaming Management.

Melco Scholarship Programme

To help employees who need financial assistance for learning, the company set up the Melco Scholarship Programme in 2010.

Melco believes family is very important, thus the Melco Scholarship programme not only applies to employees but also to their immediate family members. Considering out-of-town students as well, the scholarship is divided into four categories to support more recipients; namely, the Mainland China Scholarship, Greater China (Macau/Hong Kong/Taiwan), International Scholarship, and Hope Scholarship.

Melco YOU-niversity

“To be a whole person you have to think about ‘thinking’ – that’s what we call higher learning – to give you the opportunity to think. This is how Melco YOU-niversity was born,” says Ms. Takahashi.

In 2015, Melco partnered with Edinburgh Napier University to announce the development of the Melco YOU-niversity for employees who have yet to achieve a university degree.

One of the Bachelor of Arts in International Business Practice graduates, Ms. Cathy Chan, Operations Manager of Table Games, says: “It has been a longstanding dream of mine to attain a Bachelor’s degree; a dream which, at one point, seemed impossible to achieve in light of my work schedule and family commitments. My sincerest thanks go to my supervisors for their continuous support during my degree studies in pursuit of professional development. I am grateful to Melco for this invaluable, life transforming opportunity.”

Fellow graduate Director of Security Operations, City of Dreams Mr. Benny Lei also comments: “I was so excited when I knew I had been chosen to be one of the students of Melco YOU-niversity. Although I met some difficulties during the two years and I thought of giving up, thanks to our colleagues’ help and support I persisted for two years, and finally graduated.  The knowledge I learned in school has really helped to perfect my insight and will help me to handle my work more easily in the future.”
