Being a responsible corporate citizen – diversifying internal RG education
Witnessed by over 400 people – including, among others, Mr. Lawrence Ho, Chairman and CEO of Melco Resorts & Entertainment Limited (Melco), guests of honour and senior Melco executives and employees – the 2nd Quiz for Knowledge Responsible Gaming Competition successfully concluded at City of Dreams. A total of six teams from various departments participated in the competition, with ‘Mocha Dreams’ lifting the top prize following several exciting games.
“We spent nearly one month preparing for the competition,” said Ms. Colour Chan, Manager, Operations, Mocha Clubs. “This kind of competition is a better way for us to remember the information about RG. It’s more interesting. ”
RG is an important issue at Melco, established in 2007 and led personally by Mr. Lawrence Ho, the RG Steering Committee is dedicated to the healthy development of the industry to raise awareness and reinforce a RG culture among employees, patrons and the general public. In fact, educating employees is considered one of the most important RG strategies of the company.
The training starts as soon as an employee joins the company. All new employees must take RG training as part of their orientation, and an additional 2.5 hours enhancement training is provided for all colleagues to further develop RG knowledge.
“Apart from the training we get when we join the company,” said Colour, “[we are given] more training and annual review tests every year to help us update and consolidate our knowledge about RG.”
The training introduces employees to the concept of RG, gambling disorders, and the impact it can have on individuals, families and communities. The course also brings to life Melco’s RG policies, distilling how Melco teams, individual employees, policies and protocols come together to support the implementation of RG. Employees also engage in systematic study to enhance their ability to identify and assist those identified with gaming disorders during the training.
“There was a time a colleague came to me and asked about self-exclusion [whereupon] I transferred this colleague to the RG ambassador,” said Colour. Gaming ambassadors are employees appointed to provide assistance to customers and employees in all Melco properties. In addition to regular training, the company continuously broadcasts a public community message on RG via the company’s internal TV channel, Melco TV, employee Intranet, and annual contests.
To raise the awareness of RG, Melco organises a variety of activities such as booth games, quizzes and photography competitions for employees. Between the months of May and June alone saw 7,300 employees take part in RG events at Melco.
The winner of the 2nd Melco RG Employee Photo Competition – Mr. Alvin Paul Francisco of Studio City’s wardrobe team – said: “I believe the RG programme helps many people. There are people who become overly indulged in gambling; but the most important factor is staying in control. I want to use my submission for the photography competition titled No More Bets to ask people to avoid this situation, and to be responsible.”
“In addition to the mandatory RG training that all newcomers receive there are plenty of opportunities for colleagues at all levels to further build their knowledge of RG, which I view as an integral part of contributing to a healthy community.” he continued.
Advanced technological support
In support of the Macao SAR Government’s policies, Melco offers help for problem gamers via a series of innovative and proactive strategies. The company has also acted upon its vision by implementing preventive measures on gaming floors to reinforce RG.
Melco was the first casino operator in Macau to embed real-time facial recognition technology throughout the security systems of its integrated resorts; helping keep out patrons who opt for self-exclusion or who have been banned from entering. This advanced technology contributes to a safer integrated resort and gaming environment.
Engaging the community
To engage with the community and raise awareness of RG, Melco recently sponsored a televised public service video promoting healthy gaming practices. The film – titled ‘Our Wishes’ – explores the relationship between a father, his wife and young daughter; and the significance of the family in helping stay in control.
Melco’s commitment to promoting RG has been widely recognised, being the only gaming operator to be awarded two CSR Gold prizes at the Business Awards of Macau for its dedication to RG promotion.
