Of the people that received employment support services from the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) in the first six months of this year, some 6,962 people attended employment interviews of which 24 per cent or 1,653 were hired.

Most of the interviewees that ended up being hired, most joined the construction sector (756), security and cleaning services (235) and retail trade (146 people).

The unemployment rate in Macau was at 2.9 per cent in the second quarter of the year, remaining virtually unchanged from the previous three months.

Total employment was 375,900 and the number of employed residents totalled 276,400, down by 2,800 and 2,200 respectively from the previous period.

Among the unemployed population searching for a new job, most of them were previously engaged in Gaming & Junket Activities and the Construction sector.

However, the number of the underemployed dropped by 2,700 from the previous period to 13,600, with the majority working in Gaming & Junket Activities and the Transport & Storage sector.

The underemployed includes those employed who have involuntarily worked fewer than 35 hours during the seven days before the hours being recorded and have sought additional work during the previous 30 days
