Air quality improved with economy paralysed by pandemic

Air quality in Macau improved in 2020, the year when the pandemic virtually paralysed the territory’s economy, authorities announced today (Tuesday).

“The number of days with ‘good’ air quality observed at all monitoring stations in Macau in 2020 was higher than that recorded in 2019, the Statistics and Census Bureau announced in a statement.

“Regarding the number of days with ‘unhealthy’ air quality, it is highlighted that in all stations, significant decreases in the number of days were observed,” the same statement read.

As well as air quality, total water consumption fell 7.9 per cent on the previous year, reaching 85,515,000 cubic metres, they said.

Both water consumption by commerce and industry and water consumption by public bodies decreased by 22.3 per cent and 5.7 per cent, respectively.

However, domestic water consumption increased by 9.4 per cent.

At the same time, the Refuse Incineration Plant treated a total of 437,592 tonnes of municipal solid waste in 2020, a decrease of 19.8 per cent year-on-year, however, the volume of construction waste sent to landfill totalled 3,974,000 cubic metres, up by 66 per cent.
