All local taxis to be equipped with sound and video recording technology by the end of 2020

The Transport Bureau (DSAT) announced today that New Leader Information Technology Macao Ltd. has received a public contract to implement tracking and recording technology in local taxis.

Under new taxi regulations enforced on June 3 of this year, taxis are required to be equipped with global satellite navigation systems (GPS) tracking, plus sound and image recording equipment.

These recording devices will have to accurately record the date and time of sounds and images, and clearly record the conversation content between the taxi driver and the passenger inside the passenger compartment, as well as clearly identify the taxi driver’s and the passenger’s face, even if the taxi is in circulation at night.

After a public tender opened on October 4 of this year, eight proposals were submitted by companies looking to be the ones hired by local authorities to install and maintain these technologies – plus taximeters – with New Leader Information Technology winning the bid.

According to the DSAT, this equipment will all be installed by the end of 2020, with New Leader Information Technology to receive monthly MOP150 (US$18.6) per each system installed.
