Angola: President laments passing of general, prominent former UNITA figure

The president of Angola, João Lourenço, on Tuesday expressed sorrow at the death of Abreu Muhengo Ukwachitembo, a prominent general better known as ‘Kamorteiro’, noting that his name was “forever indelibly linked to the definitive end of the military conflict in Angola.”

‘Kamorteiro’, who until his death held the post of deputy chief of staff of the Angolan armed forces, was one of the signatories on behalf of UNITA, the main opposition party, of the 2002 peace accords signed on 4 April that year, and which marked the end of decades of civil war.

From then on, the general took up leading positions in Angola’s armed forces, becoming a prominent figure in the pacification and development of the country, said Lourenço.

“In this hour of pain, I wish to express to the bereaved family my deep condolences, extensive to all his friends and comrades in the struggle,” ends the president’s message, shared on his official Facebook page.
