Angola: Prison overcrowding in Huambo concerns authorities

Huambo, Angola – The situation was reported on Monday by the director of the prison unit, chief correctional superintendent, José Bravo Domingos, saying that, among the criminal population, there are 855 convicts and 387 prisoners on remand, including Angolans and foreigners, awaiting trial.

According to the director, of the 855 convicts, 23 are women, and among the prisoners on remand, 10 are women and three are foreigners, one from Equatorial Guinea and two Mauritanians.

The prison teaches courses in cooking and pastry, locksmithing, carpentry, masonry and quarrying only for convicts, with the aim of reintegrating prisoners into society once they have served their sentences.
