Bodies of eight decapitated men found in Mexico

Police have discovered the decapitated bodies of eight men on a rural road in the west Mexican state of Michoacan, where drug gangs are known to operate, investigators said Friday.

The bodies also had what appeared to be bullet wounds, the public prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

A telephone call alerted police Thursday to the corpses abandoned in a mountainous, sparsely populated area in the Aguililla municipality, where attacks by a drug cartel have recently been reported.

A source in the prosecutor’s office, who asked not to be identified, said the victims had been decapitated.

More than 300,000 people have been killed in Mexico since December 2006, when the federal government launched a military anti-drug operation
