Chile reports decline in COVID-19 cases in 15 regions in past week

Chilean Health Minister Enrique Paris reported on Friday that 15 of Chile’s 16 regions registered a decline in COVID-19 cases in the last seven days, with cases only rising in southern Aysen.

“Although we are observing a decline in infections, it is necessary to always maintain self-care measures,” Paris said in a statement from the Health Ministry, adding that these are the most effective measures, as the population continues to get vaccinated.

On Friday, the ministry reported 6,574 COVID-19 infections and 109 more deaths in the last 24 hours, for a total of 1,235,778 cases and 27,004 deaths.

Chilean authorities decided this week to reduce the number of quarantines and resume activities such as commerce and in-person classes in municipalities that have seen a decline in infections.

In addition, the ministry said on Thursday that another 28 communes would come out of quarantine on Monday, joining 21 others, while the South American country’s borders would remain closed through May.
