Deported Malaysian arrested in US

Eight Asians were arrested in Las Vegas on Sunday for operating an illegal World Cup gambling ring from three Caesars Palace hotel suites. Among the arrested was a Malaysian deported from Macau last month for setting up an illegal betting syndicate for the World Cup games. Eight people from Malaysia, China and Hong Kong have been accused of operating a temporary illegal gambling ring from Las Vegas that investigators said logged millions of dollars in bets on World Cup games, the Associated Press reported. The eight people were in an alleged scheme to take bets over Wi-fi and DSL lines they had casino employees install in their rooms. US Attorney Daniel Bogden said that the Las Vegas operation began shortly after one of the arrested, Phua Wei Seng, left Macau having been arrested on June 18 and posting bail on similar allegations of illegal wagering on World Cup matches. The 50-year-old Phua is from Malaysia. He was identified by Bogden as a high-ranking member of the Asian 14K Triad organised crime group, the agency reported.
