The general unemployment rate remained steady in the November 2019 – January 2020 period at 1.7 per cent, data released today by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC).
The total labour force reached 399,900 with a labour force participation rate of 70.7 per cent by that period.
At the same time, the unemployment rate of local residents also remained constant at 2.3 per cent, with the number of employed residents going up by 3,300 from the October-December 2019 period to reach 284,700.
About 25 per cent of the local labour force was employed by the Recreational, Cultural, Gaming & Other Services sector, some 85,900 people, followed by Wholesale & Retail Trade (45,900), Hotels & Similar Activities (32,000) and Construction (31,000).
The number of unemployed residents was slightly up to 6,800, of which 14.4 per cent were new labour market entrants seeking their first job.
