Gaming watchdog unaware of any irregularities committed by Suncity

The Gaming Inspection and Co-ordination Bureau (DICJ) has informed Macau News Agency (MNA) that it is unaware of any irregularities concerning activities by junket group Suncity in Macau, following a surge in online rumours suggesting the company was the target of investigations by Chinese authorities.

Online rumours circulating in recent days alleged that a Chinese anti-crime investigation targetted the company and had obtained data on Suncity customers through the company’s mobile app.

The allegations led the group’s CEO, Alvin Chau, to issue a video public statement denying the recent storm of rumours, which also alleged that the group was financially unable to Suncity to cover the deposits of its clients.

The controversy also led to a drop in the company’s Hong Kong-listed arm – which does not include junket operations – during the weekend.

“All junket promoters of Macau are subject to stringent monitoring by the DICJ, therefore the Bureau is well aware of the recent online rumours about junket promoter Suncity. So far, the DICJ did not see any irregularities in the operation of Suncity in Macau. Nevertheless, we will continue to pay close attention to the matter to ensure the healthy development of the gaming industry,” the gaming watchdog told MNA.
