Govt admits problems fighting illegal labour

The Labour Affairs Bureau has admitted that local authorities have been facing difficulties in fighting illegal workers at construction sites. One recurrent issue is assessing which contractor is responsible for hiring the illegal workers. At large construction sites, it is common for several contractors to be working at the same time. Besides, there is usually an intricate network of contractors and sub-contractors that makes it harder to find who actually employed the illegal labour. A cross-departmental work group is currently working on a revision of the current rules on this matter and others associated with fighting illegal labour more efficiently, according to the Labour Affairs Bureau.
