HK situation to be restored in two to three years – Official

Enforcing national security legislation was a turning point towards peace in the Hong Kong SAR and the situation in the city will be “restored” in two to three years, the Director-General of the Policy Research Department of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Macao SAR, Ran Bo, stated.

“The Hong Kong SAR, our neighbour, was once the worst area where the United States and a few other countries interfered and intervened in China’s internal affairs the national security legislation in Hong Kong closed long-existing legal loopholes and safeguarded national security”, Ran said at an event held by the British Chamber of Commerce in Macau yesterday (Wednesday).

On June 30, China’s top legislature unanimously passed a new national security law for Hong Kong that entered into force in the territory the same day, introducing new criminal offences for “secession”, “subversion”, “terrorism” and “collusion with foreign forces”.

The legislation was described as “marking a major turning point” for the SAR after almost a year of protests, with Ran also expressing that China’s success has been underestimated by a group of “anti-China fanatic’ countries”.

“We have heard all sort of China-bashing and arguments for decades always from a small group of countries […] Some people seem to be used to predicting China’s imminent collapse but when forecasters are repeatedly frustrated by reality […[ they try to argue that disaster will come along as China’s gets richer and better,” the official added stated
