Hotel occupancy rate reaches 12pct in May

The average occupancy rate of guest rooms in Macau has decreased even further to 12.3 per cent as of May, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) revealed today (Monday).

This monthly result was even lower the 12.9 per cent average occupancy rates reported in April.

The report excludes data on hotels & guesthouses used for medical observations.

The lowest occupancy rate for the month was reported at 5-star hotels, at only 5.5 per cent, while 2-star hotels and guesthouses saw occupancy rates of 35.1 per cent and 44.1, respectively.

The number of guests checked into hotels & guesthouses declined by almost 90 per cent year-on-year to 116,000, with guests from mainland China (71,000) and Hong Kong (10,000) both recording decreases of more than 90 per cent.

Overall in the first five months of 2020, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms reached 30.4 per cent, a drop of 61.0 percentage points year-on-year.
