Inappropriate use of masks could be behind new cases

The infected security staff working at Golden Crown China Hotel were seen not using face masks properly when they were in contact with people under medical observation, according to Health Bureau director Alvis Lo.

“The security guards had contact with the people under medical observation in the hotel and were not wearing the face mask properly”, Mr Lo told journalists in a press conference held on Sunday afternoon.

The two new cases of COVID-19 were reported on Friday night and on Saturday morning respectively. Cases number 65 and 66 are of of security guards working at Golden Crown China Hotel. These cases are related to a previous one confirmed on Friday, of a 31-year-old male resident of Turkish nationality who tested positive for COVID-19 in a nucleic acid test carried out Thursday night and had arrived in Macau, via Singapore, from Turkey, on September 18th. All three cases are of the COVID-19 Delta variant.

The infections led to a new round of mass testing which is underway until Tuesday (September 28).

Alvis Lo stressed that staff working at hotels designated for medical observation receive specific training and should also be responsible for observing the relevant rules.
