Jobless rate falls to 4.1 pct after government job fairs bring 1,200 locals back into work

The latest jobless rate for Macau citizens has edged down by 0.2 percentage points to 4.1 per cent from a quarter earlier after labour authorities provided support for over 1,200 jobseekers with recruitment events.

According to the Statistics and Census Service, Macau citizens’ unemployment rate fell slightly to 4.1 per cent between December 2022 and February 2023, compared to 5.5 per cent in the middle of last year – a level not seen in years.

However, the government statisticians said that there were still 12,200 unemployed people in the city, with the majority of them former workers in sectors related to architecture and gaming.

Since early this year, the Labour Affairs Bureau has been organising job fairs in cooperation with community partners and gaming companies in a bid to lower the jobless rate for those holding Macau IDs.

Over 3,900 jobs were on offer at 45 job fairs backed by the authorities.

However, only 1,221 jobseekers managed to return to work.

At a recent leadership inauguration ceremony by the city’s largest workers’ group, Macau Federation of Trade Unions, Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng once again pledged that locals would receive priority when it came to employment.
