Journalist José Carlos Matias replaces Paulo A. Azevedo as CEO of Project Asia Corp.

Journalist José Carlos Matias will assume the position of Chief Executive Officer and the editorial control of Project Asia Corp. effective from May 1, replacing founder Paulo A. Azevedo.

The local Macau media group is responsible for the publishing of the Macau Business (English) and Business Intelligence (Chinese) magazines and for the Macau News Agency daily news portal.

José Carlos Matias will also keep under his responsibilities the editorial control of Essential Macau, a luxury magazine now in an online version, and MBtv, an online channel for television products.

The current CEO and founder of the group, Paulo A. Azevedo, will become chairman and will lead more closely the activities of the Macau Business Readers’ Charity Association, while maintaining his position as CEO of Global Asia Media.

“I am sure that the group will be in great hands and that our projects will renew partnerships and win new alliances for the sake of free, transparent information, as a factor in the development of an increasingly prosperous Macau,” Mr. Azevedo indicated to MNA.

With 17 years of professional experience under his belt, Mr. Matias has previously worked as a radio journalist in Portugal, later moving to Macau, where he worked as a journalist and editor of Rádio Macau’s financial news between 2003 and 2009.

After that period, he acted as English News Chief Editor of Teledifusão de Macau (TDM-TV), later joining Portuguese conglomerate Global Media Group in 2018, where he served as editorial director of the external network, in addition to holding the post of director of the Portuguese-Chinese weekly newspaper Plataforma.

The reporter has also acted as chairman of the Macau Portuguese and English Press Association (AIPIM) since 2017.

“These are truly unprecedented times that require a joint effort and solidarity to overcome the crisis brought by the coronavirus pandemic. We now need more than ever journalism with a strong sense of social responsibility, community engagement and editorial independence. These have been hallmarks of the publications under Project Asia Corp. over the past 16 years, which we will strive to uphold and deepen, always with an unwavering commitment to the development of Macau,” Matias told MNA.
