A local trading firm has been found supplying parallel goods from the mainland to three supermarket chains in the city, Customs said yesterday, claiming it had seized smuggled goods to the value of MOP500,000 (US$62,500). The firm was estimated to have evaded tax amounting to MOP50,000. The trading firm, operating for more than a decade, started supplying the parallel goods to 47 branches of three supermarket chains a year ago, the Customs said, revealing that the case was reported by another food distributor. “However, all the representatives of these three supermarket chains denied that they had known that the goods supplied by the trading firm were parallel goods,” the Customs spokesman said, without naming the enterprises. According to Customs, the smuggled goods mainly comprised cheap wine and solid food items from the mainland.
