Macau | Cash handouts likely to increase – political commentator

Macau (MNA) – The cash handouts for the coming year are inevitable, and in fact are likely to slightly increase, Macau-based political commentator Larry So Man Yum told Macau News Agency.
“The government failed to address issues such as housing and transportation in the past decade,” said Mr. So. “[With the] economy improved and the growing gaming revenue, Macau residents have been voicing to increase the amount of cash handouts.”
Mr. So expects that the amount of cash that will be handed out per person will be between MOP9,000 and MOP10,000.
Civil servants are also expecting an increase in salary, as has been previously discussed for quite some time, said Mr. So.
Another important matter is the flood issue in the Inner Harbour Area.
The city was devastated by Typhoon Hato last August, with serious floods in low-lying areas causing casualties and great economic losses.
Therefore, apart from the practical approaches to resolving the flooding issues such as building tidal gates, the government might consider rolling out policies to regain the trust of residents, due to its inability to cope with the super typhoon, in particular among younger communities.
“Accountability of government officials [a necessary approach to regain the trust of young people] […] has been discussed for a long time, perhaps it is time to really prioritise the matter on the agenda. We hope to see that [mentioned tomorrow],” said Mr. So.
