Macau Pass S.A. has announced that Alipay HK and WeChat Pay HK will be accepted at its terminals across shops in Macau.
‘To promote the economic development of local merchants in Macau after the Covid-19 epidemic and enhance the consumption experience of overseas tourists, Macau Pass and AlipayHK and WeChat Pay HK’s cross-border mobile payment cooperation has been officially opened,” the company indicated.
Due to regulatory issues, the Chinese tech group Tencent launched WeChat Pay HK in 2016, with the rival Ant Financial launching Alipay Payment Services (HK) Ltd. in a joint venture with CK Hutchison in 2017.
These platforms approved by Hong Kong Monetary Authority allowed mobile payment and P2P transfers for the SAR residents, but with all transactions settled and paid with Hong Kong dollars instead of RMB.
Macau Pass runs the city’s contactless smartcard, which has various uses including e-payment, with the group headed by Joe Liu also behind the MPay mobile payment app.
‘Macau Pass hopes to provide Hong Kong visitors with a convenient electronic payment and consumption experience in Macau, promote the enhancement of spending by visitors to Macau, bring business opportunities to local merchants in Macau, and accelerate the economic recovery after the epidemic has eased,’ the company noted.
